Promoted team betting filter and backtests
The promoted team filter keeps matchups where your chosen side is new to its league this season: absent from the league's previous season, whether it came up or was relegated into it. Wrap it in a NOT to target established teams instead.
What the promoted team filter does
The filter flags sides that did not appear in their league's previous season: promoted clubs coming up, and relegated ones dropping in. Keep matchups where your chosen side, home, away, favorite or underdog, is such a newcomer; wrap the filter in a NOT node to target established teams instead. Only real league formats qualify, the previous season needs a round-robin-like density of matches per team, so cups and short tournaments never produce false newcomers.
Why newcomers are a market blind spot
Promoted teams are the hardest sides in a league to price. There is no same-level history: their results come from a different division against different opposition, so models extrapolate and the public leans on reputation, which newly promoted clubs do not have. The result is a market that repeatedly reprices these teams through the season, and every repricing window is a potential edge: early-season underdog value while respect is lacking, or fade spots when a hot start gets over-extrapolated. Relegated teams arriving in a lower division carry the opposite bias, big names priced on brand rather than current level.
Example strategies
- Back promoted teams at home as underdogs in the first phase of the season, when their level is most underestimated, using a season phase condition to bound the window.
- Fade relegated giants priced as heavy favorites in the lower division, testing whether the brand premium in their odds actually pays.
Combining it with other filters
Newcomer status frames a season-long story: add league standing once tables form to separate struggling newcomers from thriving ones, and an odds range to define exactly which prices the angle buys. Public strategies show how other builders play newcomer angles. Promoted team is an Elite filter.
Promotion myths are old; the data is not ambiguous once you ask it properly, with backtesting on years of Pinnacle historical odds. Set the side and backtest the newcomer angle in the Strategy Builder now.
