What the league line movement filter does

Between opening and closing, odds absorb information: team news, sharp money, model updates. This filter measures how much that happens per league, as the average shift in the home team's implied win probability from open to close over the league's last 50 settled matches, expressed as a 0 to 1 fraction. You keep only matchups from leagues whose average movement sits inside your band; leagues with no settled history are excluded.

Why line movement reveals soft markets

In a league priced efficiently from the start, closing lines barely differ from opening ones: there is nothing left to correct. Where openers are rough guesses, the correction shows up as large average movement. Since you typically bet at or near the opening price, high-movement leagues are where the price you get is most often wrong, in both directions. That makes average line movement one of the cleanest league-softness signals available: it is measured from the market itself, not from any model of teams.

Example strategies

• Keep leagues whose average movement exceeds 4 probability points and run a form-based angle there, where openers lag the news your filters detect.
• Use a low maximum as a robustness gate: an edge that persists in low-movement, efficiently opened leagues is much less likely to be a backtest artifact.

Combining it with other filters

Movement, limits and margins are three views of the same landscape: cross this filter with league liquidity and the vig range filter to pin the exact market environment you want. Then supply the actual angle inside it, for example rest days or a result streak, so softness and signal compound. This is an Elite filter.
