League standing betting filter: table position

The league standing filter keeps matchups where a side's position in the table at match time falls inside your rank band, counted from the top or from the bottom. The table is rebuilt from the season's results as they stood before each match.

What the league standing filter does

The filter rebuilds each league table as it stood at match time, from the current season's settled results using 3-1-0 points with goal difference and goals scored as tie-breakers, and keeps matchups where your chosen side's rank falls inside the band. You count from the top, where 1 is the leader, or from the bottom, where 1 is last, so "bottom 3" targets the relegation zone in any league regardless of its size. Teams with fewer than 5 matches played this season carry no rank, which means early-season rounds and cup ties never match: the filter refuses to pretend a table exists before it does.

Why table position is a betting signal

Standings encode two things prices handle imperfectly: quality and motivation. A top-4 side visiting a mid-table team is a quality statement, but a 15th-placed team two points above the drop in April is a motivation statement, and motivation is where markets are weakest. Relegation battlers overperform their raw quality; safe mid-table sides in May underperform theirs. Position also frames narratives the public overprices, title races and crisis clubs alike.

Example strategies

  • Back bottom-3 home teams late in the season, combining the standing band with a season phase condition to catch the survival surge.
  • Fade mid-table teams with nothing to play for against top-6 sides still chasing something, a pure motivation mismatch.

Combining it with other filters

Rank becomes sharper as a comparison: the standing gap filter measures the distance between the two teams' positions directly. Add an odds range to see what the market already charges for table position, and a league filter since the meaning of "8th place" varies by league size and stakes. League standing is an Elite filter for team sports with league tables.
