Spread cover rate (ATS) betting filter

The spread cover rate filter keeps matchups where a team's share of covered closing spreads over its last N matches falls inside your band. It measures performance against the market's expectation, not just wins and losses.

What the spread cover rate filter does

Covering the spread means beating the handicap line from the team's point of view: a 7-point favorite covering means winning by 8 or more, an 8-point underdog covering means losing by 7 or fewer or winning outright. This filter computes the share of a team's last N matches in which it covered the closing spread, counting pushes as non-covers, and keeps the matchup when that rate sits inside your min and max.

Why ATS records beat win-loss records

A win-loss record measures a team against its opponents; an against-the-spread record measures it against the market. A team can go 8-2 straight up and still be a losing bet if the market expected 9-1 performances. Persistent cover rates in either direction flag teams the market systematically misprices: improving squads whose lines lag reality, or public darlings whose lines run ahead of it. That is the raw material of handicap betting, and it is invisible in ordinary form tables.

Example strategies

  • Back teams that covered at least 70 percent of their last 10 spreads, betting that the market's adjustment is still incomplete.
  • Fade public teams with a cover rate under 30 percent over the last 10: their reputation keeps inflating their lines, and the filter finds them mechanically.

Combining it with other filters

Cover rates pair naturally with the line value filter to control how big the handicaps are, since covering as a 2-point favorite and as a 12-point favorite are different skills. Add rest days or match density to overlay fatigue on the market-lag signal, and a league filter to keep line conventions consistent. This is a Pro filter, most at home in basketball and other spread-driven sports.
