Football spread covers betting system

Some football teams keep beating the number. This template finds home sides covering in 60%+ of recent games, on single-digit lines.

Against-the-spread records are the football bettor's scoreboard. A team covering week after week is outperforming market expectations, and the question worth testing is whether that persistence survives the line moves it provokes. This template hunts it on home fields, in ordinary line ranges.

How the filter tree works

  • Spread cover rate: the home team must have covered the closing spread in at least 60% of its last 20 games, with a minimum of 8 games in the sample.
  • Line value: the closing spread sits between -10.5 and -0.5, so the team is a favorite but not laying blowout numbers.

What to watch

  • With 17-game regular seasons, a 20-game window spans more than one year, crossing rosters, coaching changes and drafts.
  • Cover rates regress hard in an era of parity; last season's great ATS team is often just average the next.
  • Oddsmakers adjust lines for popular covering teams, so part of the reputation is already in the price.

Tweaks to try

  • Require 65% to isolate extreme coverers.
  • Flip the side to away teams and compare road covering.
  • Add a month filter to test whether covering persists late in the season.
