Line value filter: backtest spreads and totals lines

The line value filter keeps only matchups whose opening main line, the handicap or total points themselves, falls inside a range. It is the natural strength and pace filter for sports where the line moves with every matchup, such as basketball.

What the line value filter does

Most filters look at odds; this one looks at the line itself. The line value filter reads the matchup's opening main line and keeps the matchup when that number sits inside your min and max. On the spread market the value is the home-side handicap: negative means the home team is favored, so a max of -3 reads as "home favored by 3 points or more". On the total market the value is the expected-pace line, for example totals between 215 and 230 points in the NBA.

Why the line beats the odds here

In sports like basketball, the odds around the main line barely move: they hover near even money on both sides. All the information sits in the line. A -12.5 spread and a -2.5 spread can carry identical odds while describing completely different matchups. Filtering on the line lets you define blowout games, coin flips, high-pace shootouts or grinding low-total games precisely, something an odds range filter cannot express in these sports.

Example strategies

  • Keep NBA matchups with an opening total above 228 to build an overs strategy around fast-paced teams.
  • Keep home spreads between -1 and -4 to focus on modest favorites, the segment where situational angles tend to matter most.

Combining it with other filters

The line sets the context; other filters supply the angle. Add rest days to catch tired teams laying too many points, or match density to fade congested schedules in games the market prices as close. A league filter keeps the sample coherent, since typical line ranges differ across competitions. The line value filter is available on the free Explorer plan.
