Year filter: backtest betting strategies by season

What the year filter does

The filter keeps matchups whose start time falls in a chosen UTC calendar year. Mechanically trivial; methodologically, it is one of the most important filters in the builder, because it lets you slice a backtest through time and see whether performance is stable or an artifact of one period.

Why time slicing protects your bankroll

The biggest danger in strategy building is overfitting: tuning rules until they explain the past perfectly and predict nothing. The classic defense is out-of-sample testing, and the year filter is the manual version. Build your strategy on some seasons, then swap the year condition and watch what happens on data the rules never saw. An edge that only exists in 2021 was never an edge; one that survives across years, market regimes and rule changes deserves real stakes. Years also isolate structural breaks: scoring environments shift, home advantage moves, leagues reform, and a per-year view shows you when your pattern was born and whether it is fading.

Example strategies

• Duplicate a strategy and pin each copy to a different year to eyeball the consistency of yield across periods before trusting the aggregate.
• Restrict a backtest to the most recent seasons only, when you believe an older market inefficiency has already been arbitraged away.

Combining it with other filters

The year filter is a lens you place over any other angle: a league filter plus year slices reveals when a league's bias emerged; a month filter inside a year isolates a single specific season phase.
