Contrarian underdog betting strategy

Blindly backing longshots burns money; backing them with a reason is a strategy. This template also introduces the most useful structural trick in the builder: an OR group inside an AND, meaning one mandatory condition plus two alternative justifications.

How the filter tree works

• Odds range: the underdog's moneyline must close between 2.80 and 6.00, real dogs, not near-even matches.
• Then an OR group where at least one branch must hold:
  • Recent results rate: the away team avoided defeat in at least 50% of its last 10 matches.
  • H2H results rate: the away team won at least 40% of the last 5 meetings with this opponent, minimum 3 meetings.

What to watch

• Underdog systems live on low win rates and long losing runs. The variance is brutal even when the expected value is positive.
• Judge results by ROI and closing-price comparison, never by hit rate.
• The two OR branches fire at different frequencies; check which one actually drives the results.

Tweaks to try

• Tighten the band to 2.80 to 4.00 to tame variance.
• Turn the OR into an AND to demand both justifications at once.
• Test home underdogs as a comparison group.
